Throughout his extensive career, John has identified that as a workplace safety or risk management professional, there are three aspects that an individual or organisation needs to have to be successful, all of which are interrelated:

1. Knowledge

2. Skills

3. Aptitude

The first area is knowledge and understanding of workplace health and safety, the full legislative framework including Acts, Regulations and Codes of Practices.

Additionally, when working in relevant professions or industries, it is important to understand how these requirements impact or any other legislation, systems or culture – for example in local government there is legislation; Industrial Awards; Integrated Planning and Reporting framework; and Audit, Risk and Improvement Committees.

Secondly, it is important to know how to transfer this knowledge into usable skills in the workplace. That is, through interpretation of legislation, provision of advice, conducting workplace inspections, safety audits and investigations. A highly skilled professional will be able to provide genuine value from these activities to the organisation rather than just “ticking boxes”.

Finally, and most importantly, a knowledgeable and skilled professional must be able to work closely with and engage a wide range of workers and managers within an organisation and communicate issues regarding safety and risk in a manner that is open, mature and welcomed by the organisation.
